Motion Design Systems: Engineering Feeling Into Product UI
Easing, springs, tokens and reduced-motion — how we build motion languages that make interfaces feel crafted instead of decorated.

Bad motion is decoration. Good motion is communication — it explains what changed, what to look at and what just happened. The difference is a system, not taste.
Motion is part of the design token set
The same way you define colors and spacing, define motion: durations, easings, and spring physics as named tokens. When a developer reaches for "enter" or "fade" instead of inventing a new curve, interfaces stay consistent by construction.
enter: spring, stiffness 260, damping 24
emphasis: spring, stiffness 380, damping 18
muted: ease [0.4, 0, 0.2, 1], 240ms
Springs beat tweens for interface elements
Physical springs feel natural because they're physical — they settle with momentum instead of stopping dead. Framer Motion makes springs first-class. Reserve timed tweens for large-scale, choreographed sequences.
Respect reduced motion like a P0 bug
Every animation ships with a fallback for prefers-reduced-motion. Not as a feature to add later — as part of the token. If you can't express your UI without motion, your UI has a deeper problem.
Motion should answer "what just happened?"
Animations are spatial: something entered, exited, reordered or changed state. Animate the layer that changed, keep the rest calm, and always move the attention to the outcome. Layout animations with layoutId are the single highest-leverage trick in modern UI motion — shared elements fly between states instead of re-rendering abruptly.
Keep the budget
Motion is a performance line item, not an extra. Springs and transforms run on the compositor; animating height and top does not. We measure before and after and keep the animation budget inside the Lighthouse target like everything else.
When motion is a system — tokens, springs, reduced-motion defaults and a performance budget — the result feels less like decoration and more like engineering. Which is exactly what it is.
